Most schools have no official “pre-med” track or major, a student can major in anything as long as he/she completes the following:

PREMEDICAL PREPARATION AT UCSD

1. Any major

2. 1 year Calculus (10 or 20 sequence) Some medical schools require a full year of math taken
in college. If your AP score exempted you from a calculus course, then you should
take additional math or statistics courses to reach a total of three.

  • 1 year General Chemistry and lab (Chem 6ABC and 6BL)
  • 1 year General Physics and lab (1 or 2 sequence)
  • 1 year Biology (Bio 1, 2 and an additional upper division course or Biology 3); some
  • schools require 1 year of upper division coursework.
  • 1 year Organic Chemistry and lab (Chem 140 ABC and 143A) recommended to be
  • taken in the sophomore year if possible.

3. Recommended, but not required to be taken prior to MCAT:

  • Biochemistry (BIBC 100 or 102)
  • Mammalian Physiology (BIPN 100)

4. MCAT Exam – recommended to be taken in the spring of your junior year
